Frequently asked questions

Answers, in plain language

If your question is not here, call us on 62 62 47 47 53 and ask. There is no such thing as a question too small.

Getting started

Who can apply for a loan?

Any Indian resident, generally aged 21 or above, with valid KYC documents and a demonstrable ability to repay. Some products differ — a gold loan can usually be taken from 18, and a group loan is assessed at the level of the group rather than the individual. Beyond age, what matters is that your income can carry the instalment without straining the household.

I have never taken a formal loan before. Is that a problem?

Not at all. A large part of our purpose is to bring first-time borrowers into the formal system. Where there is no credit history, we look at your bank records, your trade and, for group members, your savings and attendance record. Everyone starts somewhere.

Do you lend outside Tamil Nadu?

Our head office is in Tiruvarur and we serve the areas within our operating region. Call us with your location and we will tell you honestly whether we can serve you, rather than taking documents we cannot act on.

How do I apply?

Three ways: fill the form on our Apply Online page, call or WhatsApp us on 62 62 47 47 53, or walk into the office during working hours. Whichever route you use, the next step is the same — a conversation about what you actually need.

Documents and eligibility

What documents do I need?

At minimum, Aadhaar and PAN, a recent photograph, address proof and evidence of income. Secured loans need the relevant asset documents as well — a title deed for property, an RC book or quotation for a vehicle, or the ornaments themselves for a gold loan. The full list per product is on each loan page, and we confirm your specific list before you travel to the branch.

My income is from daily wages and I have no salary slip. Can I still borrow?

Yes. Many of our members earn daily or seasonally. We use bank records, trade evidence, group savings history and, where appropriate, a field visit to establish income. A missing salary slip is not a disqualification.

Do I need a guarantor?

It depends on the product and the amount. Unsecured loans above a certain size may require a guarantor or co-applicant. Group loans use the joint liability of the group instead. We tell you at the enquiry stage, not after you have gathered everything.

Can my spouse be a co-applicant?

Yes, and it is often a good idea. Adding an earning co-applicant considers the household's combined repayment capacity, which usually improves eligibility. For property loans, every recorded owner must join the application in any case.

Interest, fees and repayment

How is the interest rate decided?

The rate depends on the product, the security offered, the tenure and your repayment profile — all within the limits set by prevailing Government norms. Secured loans such as gold and property carry lower rates than unsecured personal or small group loans. Your applicable rate is stated in your sanction letter before you sign.

What charges apply besides interest?

Depending on the product there may be a processing fee, documentation or legal and valuation charges, and statutory charges such as stamp duty on mortgage documents. Every applicable charge is disclosed in writing before disbursal. If a charge is not on that list, you do not owe it.

Can I repay weekly or fortnightly instead of monthly?

For several products, yes. If your income arrives daily or weekly, a matching collection frequency is far easier to sustain than one large monthly outgo. Tell us how you earn and we will structure the schedule around it where the product allows.

Can I close my loan early?

Yes. Prepayment and foreclosure terms, including any applicable charge, are set out in your sanction letter. On short-tenure loans, early closure often saves a meaningful amount of interest, so it is worth asking for the exact figure before you decide.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

Delayed payment attracts additional interest and is reflected in your repayment record. Far more importantly: contact us before the due date if you know you will struggle. Rescheduling is often possible for a member who communicates early. Recovery is always conducted courteously and within reasonable hours — coercion has no place in our process.

How do I get my outstanding balance or a statement?

Call the office or write to uzhavaninsurance@gmail.com with your loan account number. You are entitled to know your outstanding balance, instalments paid and next due date at any time.

Gold loans

How is my gold valued?

In your presence. We record gross weight, net weight after deducting stones and fastenings, and purity for each item, and hand you a copy of the valuation. Nothing is assessed out of your sight.

Where are my ornaments kept?

Sealed in tamper-evident packets in front of you, and held in insured, secure storage for the full tenure. They are released only to you, against the loan documents and your identification.

What if I cannot repay a gold loan on time?

Speak to us before the due date. Where interest is current, renewal or rescheduling is usually possible. Auction is a genuine last resort and is always preceded by written notice to you, with any surplus over the dues returned to you.

Group and SHG loans

How do I form a group?

Speak to our field officer. Members should be from the same locality, know one another and be willing to save and meet regularly. We help new groups set up their savings register and meeting discipline before any lending begins — and we do not charge for that assistance.

What does joint liability actually mean?

It means the group collectively guarantees repayment. If one member falls short in a given instalment, the group covers it. In practice most groups resolve this among themselves, which is precisely why the model has worked for decades.

Can a group member also take an individual loan?

Yes, subject to eligibility. A clean group repayment record is one of the strongest cases a member can bring to an individual loan application, and many members progress exactly that way.

Insurance

Is insurance compulsory with a loan?

Insurance is a separate decision. Where a specific cover is a condition of a particular product — comprehensive motor insurance on a financed vehicle, for instance — it is stated in your sanction letter and explained to you. Otherwise, you are never obliged to buy a policy to obtain credit from us.

Who issues the policy?

A licensed insurance company. We help you choose, apply and service it, but the contract is between you and the insurer, and the policy document they issue governs what is covered. See our insurance page for more.

Safety and complaints

Someone asked me for an advance fee to release my loan. Is that genuine?

No. We never ask for advance cash payments, OTPs or passwords over phone, e-mail or WhatsApp, and we never collect money into a personal account. Refuse, keep the message, and report it to us immediately on 62 62 47 47 53.

How do I raise a complaint?

Start at the branch, and escalate to the Grievance Redressal Officer if you are not satisfied. The full process, including expected response times, is on our grievance redressal page.

What do you do with my personal information?

We use it to appraise and service your loan or insurance, and to meet legal obligations. We do not sell it. Our privacy policy sets out exactly what we collect, why, and how long we keep it.

Ask us directly. No obligation, no pressure — just a straight answer about what would work for your situation.
